Coverage

Coverage varies depending on the timber and surface finish.

Approximate coverage per coat:

Tin Size Coverage
150ml 0.9–1.8m²
750ml 4.5–9m²
2.5L 15–30m²
10L 60–120m²

Smooth planed timber will achieve greater coverage than rough sawn timber.

Preparation

  • Ensure timber is clean and dry before painting.
  • Moisture content should be below 20%.
  • Minimal preparation is normally required.
  • Self-priming on most timber.
  • Use Thorndown Wood Preserver on untreated exterior softwood where required.
  • Use Thorndown Stain Blocking Primer on resinous or tropical timbers to prevent resin bleed or tannin staining.

Application

Apply using:

  • High-quality synthetic brush
  • Roller
  • HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer
  • Industrial spray equipment

For best results:

  • Stir thoroughly before and during use.
  • Apply straight from the tin.
  • Avoid painting immediately before rain.
  • Maintain a wet edge when painting large areas.
  • Do not apply over partially dried paint as this may cause uneven colour.

Translucent colours should be treated more like a traditional wood stain for the best finish.

Coats Required

For exterior timber we recommend:

  • 2 coats for optimum protection.
  • Rough sawn timber generally requires only two coats as the first coat absorbs into the surface.
  • Horizontal or heavily exposed surfaces may benefit from 4 coats.

A single coat is suitable for fences and projects requiring more regular maintenance.

Drying Time

At approximately 20°C and low humidity:

  • Ready for recoat in 30–60 minutes
  • Touch dry in around 1 hour
  • Cooler or damp conditions will increase drying times.

The coating continues curing after becoming touch dry.

Dilution

For a wood stain or wash effect:

  • Dilute with clean water by up to 50% (1:1).

For clear exterior protection:

  • Apply 3–4 coats of Thorndown UV Clear.

UV Clear can also be mixed with coloured Wood Paint to create a more translucent finish.

Available in:

  • 73 Thorndown Heritage & Contemporary colours
  • UV Clear
  • 1,800+ RAL Classic & Design colours
  • 2,050 NCS colours
  • British Standard BS4800 & BS5252 colours
  • Pantone C colours

Thorndown's colour tinting technology provides 99.9% colour accuracy, and colours can be mixed together to create bespoke shades.

Cleaning

A small amount of detergent can be used if required.

  • Store in a sealed container.
  • Protect from freezing and extreme heat.
  • Stir thoroughly before reuse if stored for long periods.
  • Do not dispose of unused paint into drains or watercourses.
