Borderstone

Mushroom Staddlestone

£156 £170

These iconic mushroom-shaped stones, historically made from wood, were commonly used to support granaries, warding off pesky vermin and moisture. Numerous localized variations evolved with bases from cylindrical to rectangular or almost triangular. The round top prevented rodents from entering, and the air circulating beneath the grains ensured their dryness. Today, the Borderstone Staddlestone is simply used ornamentally, such as distinguishing cast stone boundary markers, or to line driveways.
